Tallow

Updated: Jun 12

So as I discussed previously, our skin plays a huge role in our health. This is why I started creating herbal body products for my health but also to help gently rewild my mind, body, and spirit.

As I move forward, my salves and body butters will be made with this powerhouse, tallow. I will be replacing cocoa butter with tallow for many reasons. One, tallow is available locally which makes it bioregional to me and two, in my eyes, it is the BEST for your skin.

What is tallow? Tallow is the fat or suet from a cow that has gone through a rendering process. Tallow has been used for centuries as a ritualistic skincare product and even for food. It is ancestral skincare.

Why is it the best option for skincare? It contains vitamins A, D, E, K, and B12. No plant product contains the same combination of these fat-soluble vitamins. Grass-fed tallow also contains conjugated linoleic acid which has anti-inflammatory properties. Tallow contains omega-9 fatty acid and oleic acid, which are important in helping all other nutrients penetrate the skin. Palmitic acid is another nutrient of tallow. This acid helps to improve the skin's barrier function. Tallow has stearic acid, which helps to improve your skin's flexibility, repair damaged skin, and aid in suppleness. Tallow also contains omega-7 fatty acid which is one of our skin's basic building blocks.

What are the benefits? Tallow is anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, & antimicrobial. It also contains a small amount of SPF. Its construction is similar to that of human skin cell biology making it extremely hydrating and moisturizing without the greasy/oily layer. Since it contains all of these benefits it’s one of the best remedies for any skin issue.

Can you use it on your face? Yes, since it’s antimicrobial and antibacterial it’s a great option for your face. And it matches your skin's cellular biology better than any plant product.

Taking care of your skin is just one step to rewilding yourself. But it’s a gentle way to incorporate an ancient, holistic ritual into your life.

My tallow products will be hitting the shop soon ✨

Made with: local raw beeswax, wild-harvested seasonal plant infused in local cold-pressed sunflower oil, & local, organic grass-fed tallow.

Both my Ritual body creams & Feral salves contain this amazing fat.
