Feral - wild, escaped from captivity
Ritual - a ceremonial act or actions
What are some daily routines that you have? It can be anything from waking up, washing your face, and applying your daily face creams to making your morning coffee and journaling or simply commuting to and from work. Anything you do can be a magical ritual. The big difference is your consciousness and the intentions behind your actions. Some people feel empowered from sitting down with their special tools in a meaningful place and some people feel empowered when they sit outside with nature. Whatever it is you are doing if it serves you and you are consciously setting intentions you are creating a magical ritual for yourself.
For me, creating a feral, ritualistic beauty routine is empowering. I use the terms feral & ritual to evoke a sense of wild, raw, magic because I want to make potions that are not only natural and good for you, but also centered around connecting us back to our wild roots. Feral beauty product is made with wild-harvested and natural ingredients. The idea of creating a "beauty routine" feels vain and superficial at first glance, but when you create an intentional ritual of self-love, that is not superficial. That is empowering.
As a woman moving into my 30's, I am finally realizing that not only is it okay for me to make it a priority to take care of my body and to care about what goes on my skin, but it is necessary. Not just for my body, but most importantly for my mind.
What does a feral, ritualistic beauty routine look like?
It can be something as simple as applying an oil or cream to your face first thing in the morning or before bed. A ritual doesn't have to be extensive or crazy indepth. It's simply a repetitive act that we do with intention. For me, I wake up in the morning, wash my face with cool water, & apply tallow cream. While doing so, I take a minute to "meditate" and nourish my skin. It's not much, but it's my morning ritual. Utilizing herbal body potions help to amplyfy my intentions, my practice, & support my rewilding process. (removing toxins from my life, i.e body products, house hold products, foods, etc.)
How to Craft Your Own Routine:
Creating your own beauty ritual is a very unique & personal experience. It is purely subjective to your own needs & experiences. For me, I find that I base my needs around inner healing, personal practice/craft, everyday needs & shadow work. I allow myself to focus on the areas of my ego & psyche that need support & then I allow a plant to present itself to me. Once I have become familiar with the plant & the benefits it offers, I make room for a meditative routine in which I closely work with the plant allowing it to aid in my transformation.
There is no right or wrong way to creating a routine for yourself. Ultimately, it is your intuition and the plant spirits that are guiding you to your journey of self-healing. Your ritual will look different than my rituals, because of experiences & our needs are different. Though I can't give you a step-by-step guide, I can offer you some tips & feral products to help you along your path.
Allow time & space for your needs
Keep a journal (be raw & don't edit yourself!)
Connect with your surroundings & nature (spirits, plants, animals, etc)
Appreciate & nourish the vessel that you occupy!
Practice tapping into your intuition
What Plants Do I Use?
Different plants offer many different benefits ranging from physical to mental. I work with both aspects. If I feel called to work with a specific plant for a specific reason, I am working with the spirit of the plant. I am fostering a relationship with the metaphysical aspects that plant has to offer. For other issues, regarding physical needs, I am working with the chemical constituents the plant has to offer. I personally feel that if you are drawn to a certain plant for a specific metaphysical reason, that plant is the plant you need to explore for support. Obviously, the chemical aspect of plants is very different. Working with the spirit of a plant can be as simple as sitting outside with the plant, learning about the plant, giving a space at your altar or in your garden for that plant, or just meditating with the plant. Please be mindful and aware that some plants are highly poisonous, deadly, or endangered and require special care and proper handling. For instance, if you feel compelled to work with poison ivy, don't think that gives you a free pass to touch her. She'll still possess the same chemical makeup that causes a rash. A lesson such as that would tell my intuition that I personally need to make room for space. Yet, that is purely up to your own interpretations of the lessons and support that each plant offers you.
As you move forward and learn to lean into your intuition and your practice, you will learn how to create a feral, ritualistic beauty routine that serves you and your needs. Below are a few of my feral potions I have crafted that may be helpful in crafting a personal ritual.
